HONDA'S HOME ENERGY STATION

"Who will make all the hydrogen?" is one of the biggest questions yet to be answered in the field of hydrogen powered vehicles.

Current oil companies have an obvious interest in this because their ultimate survival depends upon it.  In addition to the oil companies, car manufacturers are getting together.  GM, Daimler-Chrysler and BMW are joining up for a joint research project.   GM is on record as saying that a global code of hydrogen production and supply is required before they can go ahead and build the cars.  The GM vision is for there not only to be pipelines and tankers transporting hydrogen around the world but also for there to be local production.

Just how local is where it gets interesting.

How would you like your own hydrogen plant at home, in your garage?  Using water and electricity derived from solar cells, it should be straight-forward enough to generate all the hydrogen you may require for your car.  Honda has recently admitted it is thinking in the same way and has plans for what it calls "The Home Energy Station" which will be capable of powering the home and fuelling a car.

At its research and development center in Torrence, California it has had an experimental station working since 2001.  The electricity generated from highly efficient solar cells passes through a power converter which amplifies  the electricity to a high enough voltage to electrolyse water into its compound elements of hydrogen and oxygen.  The hydrogen then passes via a compressor into storage tanks for later use.

So in the not too distant future not only will your car run on water but your whole house may be powered by it.
